Here are a few jumping off points to investigate if you want to model global citizenship for - or even WITH - your students:
* Teachers for Global Classrooms
Teachers for Global Classrooms is, in the words of the US State Department, "a year-long professional development opportunity for US elementary, middle, and high school teachers to become leaders in global education. Global education is integral to building 21st century skills, and teachers are the greatest resource to empower students as global citizens. TGC equips teachers to bring an international perspective to their schools through targeted training, experience abroad, and global collaboration."
* Fulbright Teacher Exchange
Also a US State Department program, the Fulbright Teacher Exchange is open to teachers K - 12 and aims to engender mutual understanding among teachers. There is a 2-8 week project program and a 3-6 month program that includes university courses. The Philippines has an especially strong Fulbright program.
* Primary Source
Primary Source is a global education focused non-profit that provides courses and travel opportunities for students and teachers. I took their excellent Teaching East Asia course - it was free and included ample free resources. Their website includes multiple upcoming trips.
* Kim Young's extensive guide to free travel for teachers. Once you've read this, you are on your way. There's no excuse not to travel. Get your passport ready.
* In Portland - Falcons Take Flight exchange with Tokyo, Japan
Our sister city since 1992, hundreds over Portlanders have stayed with Japanese families in Shinagawa for three weeks in the summer. Many Japanese friends have come and stayed with us as well. This is a rich and deep learning opportunity.
